Protect yourself and your family from ticks

Late summer–autumn: Ticks lie in wait in woods, meadows, bushes, fallen leaves and playgrounds.
The areas where meningitis is prevalent are spreading further and further. The tick is brushed off as you walk past. It then bites. As the tick’s saliva contains anaesthetic substances, the bite often goes unnoticed for a long time.

Typical symptoms:

7–10 days after a tick bite: flu-like symptoms such as headaches and aching limbs, fever and a runny nose. After 10 days, these symptoms may worsen, accompanied by inflammation of the spinal cord (fever, sensitivity to light, stiff neck and vomiting). Permanent damage such as paralysis and coordination problems may result. The disease can also be fatal. The severity of the disease increases with age.

Vaccination is therefore strongly recommended!

What to do if you discover a tick:

Grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible with tweezers and
… carefully pull it out backwards
Disinfect the area; if any part remains, consult a doctor
Do not twist the tick, and do not use oil
Monitor the bite site for 6 weeks: if you notice ring-shaped redness – which may also spread! – consult a doctor.
